Ego death through psychedelics

Ego death through psilocybin

It sounds rather bombastic. The death of the ego. I’ll try to break it down:
– We humans have an “ego” or “self”. This “Ego” or “Self” could be called our personal identity, it defines who we are and what we think.
– The death of the Ego means that we experience reality without this personal identity as the experiencer. There is no seperation between reality and our own identity. What remains?

In more ancient traditions they would talk about subject and object. The duality of the observer and the observed. Ego death would mean that this duality of observer and observed is dissolved. At least, for a bit. So what remains if not our personal identity? Well, that’s the fun part. There are countless of books and ways of explaining what happens when we do experience the death of “ego” or “self”. In this episode, Quinn talks about his personal experience of this phenomena.

Quinn Travis shares his transition from Psychedelics to Yoga

From psilocybin to Yoga

There are certain experiences that are universally reported by those who used psychedelics. That is, when they experience a “good” trip. From Alduous Huxley, Timothy Leary to modern day psychonauts (the name for those exploring consciousness in this way), there are certain aspects of the trip that are common. I’ve just read “The Psychedelic Experience” by Timothy Leary and talk about it with Quinn. After experiences of interconnectedness, ego death or meeting with divine deities… what remains? Quinn was reborn as a new human. In a way, still, “Quinn” … but aware this identity or ego was not necessary to experience life. He changed his ways and became less anxious and driven to explore what further lies on the spiritual path. He picked up Vinyasa Flow and became a yoga teacher.

Navigating your way through the world with meditation and mindfulness

So what now?

We talk about purpose, what drives you and what gives you purpose? It is a returning topic in our podcasts. Where are you going? Why are you on this planet? The answer to the question is usually different for our meditators, yet strikingly similar. Wherever we came from or wherever we are going, it’s all about experiencing the Now. Being here and now, fully in the present moment. We continue to talk about what Quinn is currently reading. Guess what? It’s the guy who is all about the power of Now. Eckhart Tolle, the writer of the infamous “The Power of now” and “A new earth”.

Follow your path

Follow your path. It’s not going to be the easiest. When you experience a lifechanging moment, it’s hard to explain it to others. There might be people who think you lost it, or even criticize you for it. Central in Quinn’s advice is to follow your own path. There will be people who judge you or call you fake, but that’s not your problem. You can focus completely on your own path and engage in it fully.
